How to Start a Backyard Garden: Tips for New Settlers

Starting a backyard garden might seem daunting, but with a bit of planning and creativity, you can create a thriving backyard garden. Here are some essential tips for those looking to cultivate their green thumb.

1. Assess Your Space and Sunlight

Before planting, observe how much sunlight your space receives throughout the day. Most vegetables and herbs need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to grow well.

Tip: Use a sun calculator app or mark shadows throughout the day to better understand your sun exposure.

2. Choose the Right Containers or Beds

If you’re limited on space, raised garden beds, vertical planters, and containers are excellent options. They also offer better drainage and can be moved to catch more sunlight.

Good container choices:

  • Buckets or old crates (with drainage holes)
  • Window boxes
  • Hanging planters

3. Select Easy-to-Grow Plants

Start with beginner-friendly crops that don’t require extensive care. These include:

  • Leafy greens: Lettuce, spinach, kale
  • Herbs: Basil, mint, parsley, chives
  • Vegetables: Radishes, cherry tomatoes, green beans, zucchini

4. Use Quality Soil and Compost

Healthy soil is key to a productive garden. If you’re using containers, opt for high-quality potting soil and mix in compost to enrich it. Compost can be homemade or purchased and helps retain moisture while supplying nutrients.

Tip: Start composting kitchen scraps to reduce waste and boost your garden’s health.

5. Water Wisely

Consistent watering is essential. Water in the early morning or late afternoon to reduce evaporation.

Watering tips:

  • Stick your finger into the soil; if it’s dry an inch below the surface, it’s time to water.
  • Use mulch to retain moisture and regulate temperature.

6. Start Small and Expand Slowly

It’s easy to get excited and overplant. Start with a few crops and learn as you go. Once you gain confidence, you can expand your garden over time.

Starting a backyard garden doesn’t require acres of land or a green thumb. With a little effort and creativity, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown produce and the satisfaction of cultivating your own food—even right here at Settler’s Square. Happy planting!
